Child Safe Scouting

The safety and wellbeing of the young people in our care is our number one concern and priority. As a thriving, modern organisation, Scouts Australia and community-based Scout Groups like 1st/2nd Greensborough strive to be vigilant in identifying, responding to, and eradicating child abuse. Our policy is to report allegations of child abuse to police and other child protection authorities, and stand down any adults about whom such allegations are made.

Here's some of the many things we do to a create Child Safe Scouting environment:

  • Any member aged 18 or over (including adult leaders, Rover Scouts, adult helpers, committee members, employees of the movement) are required to hold a Working With Children Check
  • All adult leaders and adult helpers are required to undergo a National Police Check
  • All adult leaders require three referees when applying for membership
  • All adults in Scouting must agree and adhere to the Code of Conduct and Ethics and Unacceptable Behaviours guidelines
  • All adults in Scouting undertake training, including mandatory training on Child Safe practices
  • Every member, upon joining Scouts, signs a permission form that provides Scouts Victoria with permission to use their photos for publication online and elsewhere. If you do not wish to give consent, that's ok too. Ensure the adult leaders and Group Leader are aware of your position.
  • Scouts Australia and Scouts Victoria have strong policies in place for responding to child abuse allegations, including a dedicated 24 hr phone line and email address
  • Scouts Victoria has embraced the Victorian Child Safe Standards since they were implemented in 2016. Systematic reviews of practices by Scouts Victoria occur to ensure that we adhere to these standards.
